SENEGAL BECOMES BERD'S 78TH SHAREHOLDER: A STRATEGIC STEP TOWARDS EXPANDING ITS ECONOMIC PARTNERSHIPS
Senegal has officially joined the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) as its 78th shareholder, alongside Kenya. This marks a major step forward for the country's international profile, and reflects the renewed confidence of international financial institutions in its economic potential.
Submitted in October 2023, Senegal's application for membership was approved by the EBRD Board of Governors in February 2024. This process comes at a time when the Bank's scope of operations is expanding, particularly following the amendment of Article 1 of its founding agreement, which now allows it to operate in sub-Saharan Africa and Iraq.
For the Minister of Finance and Budget, Mr. Cheikh Diba, this membership is a strategic turning point:
"It demonstrates, once again, the renewed confidence in our country. By joining the EBRD, Senegal is strengthening its commitment to sustainable growth, underpinned by private investment for the systemic transformation of our economic fabric."
The EBRD, renowned for its support of transition economies, offers a combination of investment, technical advice and support for structural reforms. Its private sector development model opens up new prospects for Senegalese businesses, which can now benefit from innovative financing tailored to their needs.
With this integration, Senegal joins an institution with 77 member states, the European Union and the European Investment Bank, committed to a greener, more inclusive and digitized economy.
EBRD President, Odile Renaud-Basso, welcomed this development:
"This is a crucial step in the beginning of our investments in sub-Saharan Africa. We look forward to leveraging our expertise to stimulate sustainable growth and strengthen policy dialogue in the region."
This partnership ushers in a new era for Senegal, consolidating its position as a leading economic and diplomatic player on the African continent and beyond.

According to expert Babacar Diouf, the AfDB's integrated safeguard system, particularly the involuntary resettlement policy, is seriously threatened by the bank's attitudes.
LSD supports women in several countries. During a meeting, the association's project manager, Aby Dia, invited the ADB and all other banks to respect environmental protection policies.

Saly, August 14 - The Lumière Synergie pour le développement (LSD) organization has launched a training program entitled "Ecole Ecoféministe" (Ecofeminist School), aimed at strengthening the commitment of young girls from Bargny, a commune in the Dakar region, and the Saloum Delta (Fatick) in the fight against gender-based inequalities and for climate justice.
Nearly a year after the start of oil production at Sangomar, women's activities in the Saloum delta are slowing down. Fishery resources are becoming scarce. Worse, they complain, the Woodside oil company, which operates Sangomar, does not involve them in any of its activities. They want their concerns to be taken into account to ensure responsible exploitation of the black gold.
